Purpose
In order for our students to get the most out of their reading experiences, it is imperative that teachers are well informed about the texts that they choose to read in their classroom.
This means that educators need to be very familiar and aware of pertinent background information, literary devices, and resources associated with each text they implement in their classroom. This is key in creating a rich reading experience for all of one's students.
After reading a text, students should be able to identify and explain major historical events, places, and people that are associated with the text. In this way, students will become more aware of culturally, diverse issues that will ultimately lead to their growth as a person. Students should also be able to explain important themes, motifs, and concepts in the text as well, in order to demonstrate their knowledge of not only the text's plot, but also its significance as well.
This website is dedicated to help prepare educators for teaching a text by sharing pertinent background information, challenges that need to be addressed, and helpful resources for sample texts, in order to make teachers aware of the type of research they need to conduct in order to efficiently prepare to teach a text to students.

This is why English teachers do what we do.

“If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.”– J.K. Rowling
“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
– Stephen King
“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” – Roald Dahl

My name is Briana Holmes.
I graduated from Hardaway High School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program in May of 2015. Later, I began attending Columbus State University (CSU) in the fall of 2015. At CSU, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in science and English/language arts. After graduation, I plan to be a middle school science or ELA teacher. But, my ultimate goal is to be English professor at an accredited university. In the meantime, I currently and previously have occupied several positions that have allowed me to experience duties, similar to those of educators. Currently, I am employed as a writing and Spanish tutor at Columbus State University’s Academic Center for Tutoring (ACT). I love being a tutor because I get to connect with students and I enjoy using my strengths to help us others improve upon their weaknesses. Tutoring is also very similar to teaching, except that it is usually conducted one on one. I have also served as a CSU Diversity Peer Educator, Orientation Leader, Prowl Pack leader and Activ8 Aide. When I am not working, I enjoy reading, making smoothies, and watching crime documentaries. |
